The military court confirmed the arrest of the ex-commander of the 58th Army, Major General Popov

The press service of the court noted that he was arrested on suspicion of fraud on an especially large scale.

 

The 235th Garrison Military Court confirmed the arrest of the former commander of the 58th Army of the Russian Armed Forces, Major General Ivan Popov, in a fraud case. The press service of the court reported this to TASS.

“We can confirm that on May 17, the court arrested Major General I.I. Popov on suspicion of fraud on an especially large scale (Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). This preventive measure was chosen for a period of two months,” the press service said, adding that the case is being investigated by the Main Investigations Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation. No other details of the case were disclosed in court.

Earlier, law enforcement agencies reported the arrest of the TASS officer.

Popov began his service as a platoon commander in the 56th Airborne Assault Regiment. Later he commanded various units and formations. He participated in a special military operation in its various sectors, including as commander of the 58th Army.
