The EU agreed on sanctions against India and China for “ties with Russia”

The EU has agreed on the first sanctions against companies from China and India, which it accuses of supplying dual-use goods to Russia; they will affect almost 200 individuals and legal entities, writes FT. Moscow considers Western restrictions illegal.

According to documents seen by the FT, the sanctions will target three companies in China, one in India, as well as organizations in Sri Lanka, Turkey, Thailand, Serbia and Kazakhstan. They plan to introduce trade restrictions after their assistance in the supply of dual-use goods to Russia, including electronics and microchips, is established. In total, according to the publication, the restrictions will affect almost 200 individuals and legal entities, but they are not “radical economic measures aimed at the industrial sector.”

“It is also appropriate to include in this list other organizations in third countries that indirectly support the Russian military-industrial complex through trade in related goods,” the FT quotes an excerpt from the document.

The 13th package of  EU sanctions against Russia is planned to be adopted on February 24, the second anniversary of the start of the military operation in Ukraine. At the same time, the names of individuals and legal entities from China and India will become known, the publication clarifies.

Since 2022, Brussels has introduced 12 packages of sanctions against Moscow, the last of which was adopted in December 2023. This included restrictions on the import of non-industrial diamonds, cast iron, copper and aluminum wire from Russia, as well as export restrictions on chemicals, lithium batteries, thermostats, DC motors and servos for drones. 29 legal entities were included in the sanctions list for “direct support of the Russian military-industrial complex.”

According to Reuters sources, in the 13th package, 200 Russian companies and individuals will be subject to restrictions. Bloomberg claimed that the restrictions would include 55 companies and 60 people from Russia that are associated with the production of weapons or the supply of key technologies and electronic components to Russian defense industry enterprises.

Russia considers the sanctions of Western countries illegal. Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov noted that they will remain for many years.
