The Swiss Foreign Ministry called for Russia to be included in the discussion on a peaceful settlement in Ukraine

GENEVA, January 14. /TASS/. Russia must be included in the peace process in Ukraine. This was stated at a press conference in Davos by the head of the Swiss Foreign Ministry, Ignazio Cassis. The press conference was broadcast online on the website of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

“One way or another we must find a way to include Russia in the process. There will be no peace without Russia having its say,” Cassis said.

The Foreign Minister said that representatives of 83 countries are participating in the meeting on the Ukrainian “peace formula” at the level of national security advisers, convened on January 14 in Davos at the initiative of Switzerland and Ukraine. He emphasized that he considers “very important” the participation of the BRICS countries  - Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia and South Africa - in the current discussions, given the fact that they “could have an influence on Russia.” Asked about China's absence from the meeting, the minister said it was necessary to "find better ways to work with China to make progress" as Beijing "can play a critical role in this whole process."

“Without dialogue, we will not reach a successful outcome,” Cassis continued. He called the task of a peaceful settlement in Ukraine “not easy,” emphasizing that the process “will be long, but there is no other choice but to follow this path.”

In 2023, three meetings were held in the format of this “formula”. The last of them took place in Malta on October 28-29, 2023.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, speaking via video link to participants at the G20 summit in mid-November 2022, put forward a so-called 10-point peace plan that does not take into account Moscow’s position. We are talking, in particular, about the complete withdrawal of the Russian Armed Forces from the 1991 borders and the return to Ukraine of control in the “exclusive economic zone” in the Black and Azov Seas. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov noted that Kyiv’s statements about a peaceful settlement are made without taking into account existing realities. Moscow does not see progress in the peace process around Ukraine and therefore continues a special military operation.
