Putin: the blockade of Leningrad became genocide and only part of the Nazi atrocities

The blockade of Leningrad became only part of the Nazi atrocities and genocide, the assessment of which should remain unshakable. This statement was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of a requiem concert in honor of the 80th anniversary of the lifting of the blockade of Leningrad, he is quoted by RIA Novosti.

"Their actions are consistent with the internationally recognized definition of genocide," the head of state said.

The Russian leader reminded that the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War worked cynically and consciously, deliberately condemning the residents of the blockaded city to inhuman deprivation and torment.

According to Putin, Nazi atrocities, hunger and disease at that time took the lives of more than a million people, mostly women, children and pensioners.

"We will ensure that the assessment of such crimes is unshakable in the international law system," the president concluded.

Before that, Putin, in the company of his Belarusian colleague Alexander Lukashenko, took part in the opening ceremony of the memorial in memory of the victims of Nazism during the Great Patriotic War. The monument is located in the village of Zaytsevo, Gatchina district, Leningrad region.
