Germany urged to transfer Taurus missiles to Kiev to strike targets in Russia
In Germany, a number of representatives of the Green Party, the FDP (Free Democratic Party), as well as the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) stated the need to transfer Taurus missiles to Ukraine and accused German Chancellor Olaf Scholz of unnecessive restraint. The Rheinische Post wrote about this on January 6.
It is noted that some politicians openly advocated attacking objects on the territory of Russia.
"The supply of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine is long overdue," the publication quotes Sarah Nanni, an expert on security policy of the Soyuz-90 / Green faction.
In her opinion, the most effective protection against air strikes by the Russian Armed Forces is the shelling of targets by Ukraine on Russian territory and in new regions of the Russian Federation. She stated that passivity comes primarily from the Chancellor and is not the general position of the government.
In turn, the head of the parliamentary defense committee Marie-Agnes Strak-Zimmermann (FDP) urged German politicians not to be afraid of "own courage". He believes that the country should finally supply Taurus to "interrupt Russian supply lines."
In addition, the foreign policy expert of the CDU Roderich Kiesewetter expressed the opinion that insufficient provision of military assistance to Kiev allegedly "is the de facto support for Russia."
"Taurus is important because this system is effective and it can destroy supply and command structures far beyond the front line," says the Bundestag deputy.
As Kiesewetter pointed out, missiles can destroy the Crimean Bridge and thereby complicate the supply of Russian forces through the peninsula, forcing Russia to leave Crimea.
Earlier, on January 3, the head of the German Bundestag (Parliament) Committee on European Affairs Anton Hofreiter and representative of the Christian Democratic Union for Foreign Policy Norbert Röttgen said that Ukraine needed to supply Taurus cruise missiles. According to him, Berlin has already done a lot for Kiev in the field of air defense, but much more is needed.
The day before, the head of the Bundestag Defense Committee, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, appealed to the German authorities to transfer Taurus cruise missiles to Kiev as soon as possible. She noted that otherwise, statements of long-term support for Ukraine would be just empty words. A similar demand was made by the expert of the Soyuz-90 / Greens faction on security policy issues Sarah Nanni.
At the same time, retired Colonel of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Oleg Starikov said that Russia allegedly creates a powerful satellite constellation over Ukraine, which in the future will allow to intercept all Western missile systems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). According to him, with the help of vehicles that record missile launches, the Russian army will be able to intercept HIMARS, ATACMS and Taurus missiles with high efficiency.
On November 27, Czech President Petr Pavel said that the West had not fulfilled the promises made to Kiev to supply the weapons necessary to continue intensive operations. According to him, the Ukrainian army expected to receive German Taurus after Storm Shadow missiles, but Berlin never made a final decision on their supply.
Western countries have strengthened military and financial support for Kiev against the background of the Russian Federation's special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which was announced on February 24, 2022 by Russian leader Vladimir Putin after the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
