The British Defense Minister raised panic about the “threat to the whole world” from a Russian victory
British Defense Minister Shapps: If Russia defeats Ukraine, the whole world will suffer
If Russia gains the upper hand in the conflict in Ukraine, the negative consequences will be felt throughout the world. This statement was made by the head of the UK Ministry of Defense, Grant Shapps, in an interview with The Sunday Times, thus arguing for an increase in defense spending and the fight against global autocracies.
"If we allow [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to win this conflict by dragging it out and he somehow wins it by exhausting everyone else, then we will suffer the consequences. And those consequences will be incredibly harsh for Europe, for the UK, for the world. So we literally cannot afford not to win this war,” said the head of the British military department, noting that the consequences of the West’s defeat will be felt even in the Indo-Pacific region.
The minister believes that there is no price that would be too great to prevent Russia's victory. And The Sunday Times considered these words a call to arms.
During the interview, Shapps criticized those Western countries and “even G7 countries” that spend only 1-2% of their GDP on defense. He is convinced that the UK will allocate 2.5 of its own GDP to defense “once this will become possible." He himself believes that it would not be a pity to invest 3%, or even larger investments, for such needs. And, in his understanding, the rest of the West should think the same way and act accordingly - these are the realities of our dangerous world.
Earlier , the American press stated that it was time for the West to stop trying to build a dialogue with Russia from a position of strength; this is the only way to reach a consensus regarding the conflict in Ukraine. The author of the material cited as arguments the obvious fatigue of the West from the conflict in Independence and the failed counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
