All that glitters: 5 glimmering beauty looks to recreate this holiday season

Moonlight glinting, dappled sunlight, shimmering mirrors, a new Dior make-up collection pays tribute to light. Here, make-up artist Kellie Stratton shares her tips for application.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. It’s also the most glamorous with the introduction of Dior Beauty’s 2023 Holiday collection. Channelling the magic of Paris during the holiday season, the maison’s newest beauty lineup takes inspiration from Christian Dior’s own verdant muses: the many gardens of Paris, namely the Jardin des Tuileries.

Looking to Monsieur Dior’s lush sources of inspiration, as well the city’s historic architecture and the bright white snow that blankets Paris in the winter, Peter Philips — creative and image director for Dior make-up — designed a collection that pays tribute to the City of Lights in all its storied beauty, but also to the romance of the holiday season.

Taking cues from the golden hues of Parisian monuments, pure snow white, and baroque details from the Tuileries, Dior’s 2023 Holiday collection is one that is rich and elegant, perfect for the festive season. As we approach the year’s close, and all the celebrations that mark it, Vogue has partnered with make-up artist Kellie Stratton to create five breathtaking looks inspired by the collection that you can recreate yourself.

Blushed up

The first is one that simply recreates the joyful blush of the holidays. With the Dior Rouge Blush in Splendid Rose, Stratton suggests works with a well prepped, clear base — created with the Dior Forever Skin Glow Foundation — to really make the cheeks pop. “Being mindful of your preparation before applying blush is key,” she tells Vogue. To complete the look, Stratton takes two metallic shades from the Dior Diorshow 5 Couleurs eye shadow palette in Promenade Dorée, a warmer hue on the lid and a cooler one on the eye’s inner corner.

Metal moment

The second is arguably the simplest, but most striking, look — taking the Dior Diorshow 5 Couleurs eye shadow palette in Night Walk, apply the bright silver shade all over the lid, and line your lower lash line with the hue. But there’s a trick to really making this look pop: “When applying metallics, I like to wet the brush first. This creates a little more drama to the metallic shadow by adding a soft painterly effect,” explains Stratton.

Holiday magic

If your holiday aesthetic is a little moodier, this third look is for you. Using richer hues, like the Dior Diorshow 5 Couleurs eye shadow palette in Promenade Dorée, the Rouge Blush in Precious Rose, and Rouge Dior Couture Lipstick in 400 Nude Line, add a sumptuous touch with a shine of metallic. “I like to use metallic shadow to highlight certain areas of the eye. Applying the metallic shadow in the corner of the eye or the centre of the eyelid creates a subtle yet eye-catching effect,” Stratton notes.

Cherry lips

There’s nothing that says holiday season louder than a red lip—especially when said red lip also incorporated a little sparkle. “Everyone I work with has a favourite red; it’s such a personal choice. I am loving this shade from Dior (the Dior Rouge Dior lipstick in 999 Velvet) applied straight from the applicator. It has little flecks of glitter to catch in the light.” Add a simple wash of bronze from the Diorshow 5 Couleurs eye shadow palette in Promenade Dorée and a light touch of the Rouge Blush in Precious Rose to finish.

Dark and stormy

If your beauty look typically centres around the eye, this fifth look is perfect. No matter your eye shape, this dark, smoky look will work for you. “It’s key to understand the eye shape you have and work with that. The trick is to meticulously blend in the shape. Layering a softer shade to the eyelid and inner corners adds dimension and reflection.” Look to the Dior Diorshow 5 Couleurs eye shadow palette in Promenade Dorée for a dark wash and add dimension with the Dior Forever Couture Luminizer highlighter in 01 Nude Glow.
